425 fourth street townhouses

Canada’s first and largest residential community constructed using on-site robotics—a demonstration of how automation can deliver durable, energy-efficient housing for the Canadian climate.

Located in Gananoque, 425 Fourth Street is a 26-unit purpose-built rental community offering studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom homes. Thirty percent of the units are designated as affordable housing.
The challenge was to translate an emerging robotic construction system into practical homes that meet the Ontario Building Code and respond to Canadian weather conditions. Architecture Unfolded worked closely with Horizon Legacy to integrate robotically printed concrete wall assemblies with the building’s structure, services, envelope, and conventional construction components.

The project’s high-performance wall system achieves R-30 thermal performance, while the all-electric buildings are designed to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Shared green spaces and connections to nearby waterfront trails create a welcoming residential setting within the Gananoque community.

Architecture Unfolded provided architectural services from initial design through approvals, building permit, construction documentation, and construction administration. The completed project demonstrates that robotic construction can move beyond experimentation and become a practical method for delivering housing in Canada.
